Cowpea Seeds (Lobia Beans), also known as black-eyed peas or Barbati, are one of the most popular leguminous vegetables. 

A perfect vegetable to grow in partially shaded windows, balconies, and terraces of city apartments. It is planted for its long, green pods to be cooked as vegetables or dry seeds for use as a pulse.

Cowpea is a heat-loving vine plant and the best month for planting cowpea is either February-March or June to July.

When to sow seeds?

To plant cowpea, you need to select a pot or grow bag that is at least 15-24 inches wide and deep with good drainage holes.

Grow bag size?

Sow the cowpea seeds at a depth of 1 inch in the soil at a distance of 2 inches from each other.

Seeds Sowing depth?

Cowpea seeds will take about 1 to 2 weeks for germination. The seeds can germinate rapidly when the temperature is 20-30°C.

Germination days?

Cowpea doesn’t require fertilizers but you can add an organic fertilizer like vermicompost, bone meal, or Neem cake at the time of planting.

Best Fertilizer?

The plant needs full sunlight every day (at least 6 to 8 hours of direct light) but partial shade is also suitable for growing cowpea.

Sunlight requirement?

Cowpea requires regular watering during the growing season, try not to get the leaves wet; Keep the soil moist in dry weather.

Water need?

Cowpea will take about 50 to 90 days to harvest.
