How To Care For

Vine Vegetables?

By Shama Parveen

Shade vine vegetables are plants that grow best in partially shaded areas of our home gardens or terrace gardens, like peas, beans, and pumpkins. Here are some tips on how to care for shade vine vegetables:

Planting

Choose a location that receives at least 3-4 hours of sunlight per day with partial shade during the hottest part of the day.

1

Soil

Check that the soil is well-draining and rich in organic matter.

2

Watering

Shade vine vegetables need consistent moisture to thrive, so be sure to water them deeply and regularly, especially during hot and dry days.

3

Fertilizing

Fertilize every 20-25 days as per the requirement of the plants. You can use vermicompost, neem cake, bone meal and rock phosphate as organic fertilizers.

4

Support

These climbing plants need support when they grow up, so support them by planting wood in the soil of the pot.

5

Pest control

Shade vine vegetables are affected by a few pests such as aphids, cucumber beetles and squash bugs. So keep an eye out for signs of infestation and use organic insecticidal soap or neem oil to eliminate these pests.

6

Pruning

Check the plants regularly, if the leaves appear dry, wilted, or yellow, you can prune the plant with pruning tools. This will help keep the plant healthy and increase fruit productivity.
