Microgreens are the first "true leaves" produced from vegetable and herb shoots, which are about 2 to 3 inches long. There are many varieties of plants that can be grown as microgreens, including turnips, radishes, broccoli, cauliflower, carrots, chard, lettuce, spinach, amaranth, cabbage, beets, parsley, and basil.
You can grow microgreens in any type of tray. However, a sturdy 2-4 inch deep plastic tray with drainage holes is best.
You can grow microgreens in a soil mix or in a soilless medium such as tissue paper, or coco peat.
To grow a particular microgreen, it is especially recommended to take microgreen seeds rather than mature vegetable seeds.
Microgreens need at least 3-4 hours of natural light a day. A sunlit windowsill is a great place to keep a pot or growing tray of microgreens.
The container or growing tray can be kept at room temperature for about two days until the microgreens seeds germinate.
Growing trays kept in an open or sunny place can be watered with a spray bottle at least once a day. Remember, keep the soil moist until the seeds germinate, don't overwater.
The younger leaves of most microgreens are ready to harvest in 12 to 14 days.
Using sharp scissors, cut the stem of your microgreen plant just above the soil.
