Perlite and vermiculite are both used in gardening to improve the quality of the soil. Both these substances appear to have similar benefits. If these two are so similar then the question in your mind will be why both are needed in preparing the soil. Can using either one work? So let's know the difference between the two.

Water Holding Capacity

Vermiculite has a high ability to retain moisture for a long time.

While perlite can only retain moisture for a short time.

Drainage Capacity

The drainage capacity of vermiculite is not very good.

Nutrients

Perlite does not contain any nutrients

Vermiculite contains small amounts of potassium, magnesium and calcium.

Use

Perlite is use to make compacted soil porous, to make well-draining soil and to make the soil quick-drying during winter

Vermiculite is use to make potting mix for seed germination, to make soil with good water holding  capacity and to keep the soil moist for longer period of time during summer

Color

Perlite is white in color.

Vermiculite is brown in color.
